Senior year is a big deal — and your senior photos should feel just as special! But let’s be real: planning for a photoshoot can feel like trying to put together an Ikea dresser without the instructions. That’s where I come in! As a senior photographer based in Virginia and Maryland, I’ve got you covered with this ultimate senior photoshoot checklist. From outfits to props to mindset — we’re covering it all so you can show up feeling relaxed, confident, and ready to shine.
Outfits: What to Wear for Your Senior Session
First things first — the outfits. Because let’s face it, what you wear matters. You want to look like you — but maybe the slightly more put-together version of you.
Pick Two to Three Outfits
One casual outfit (think jeans and a cute top)
One dressy outfit (because you deserve to feel fancy)
One that reflects your personality — sports jersey, band tee, cowboy boots — whatever feels right!
Bonus outfit: a business casual outfit to get some headshots for ur Linkedin profile (this is included in my larger senior package!)
Pro tip: Stick to solid colors or soft patterns — busy prints can steal the spotlight from your face. Earth tones, neutrals, and soft pastels always look great against the fields and beaches of Virginia and Maryland.
Avoid Logos and Neon Colors
Remember in middle school when all the boys used to wear an outfit that was entirely one neon color... unless you’re going for that look, stick to subtle tones and classic styles.
A pop of color can be fun but not as the main focus, that's supposed to be you!
Accessories Matter
- Jewelry is such a fun way to show off your style!
- Hats and sunglasses? Yes, but use them sparingly
Props: Bring the Personality
Props are the secret that make your photos you. They help tell your story and give you something to do with your hands (because the awkward “what do I do with my hands?” is a universal experience).
Ideas for Props:
- Sports gear (soccer ball, basketball, lacrosse stick)
- Musical instruments
- Graduation cap and gown
- Your dog (because let’s be honest — they’re part of the family)
- Books or a notebook (if you’re the academic type)
Pro tip: Keep it simple — 1 to 2 props max, so you don’t feel like you’re carrying a whole moving truck.
Hair and Makeup: Keep It Real
You don’t need a full glam squad — unless that’s your thing! The goal is to look like the best version of yourself.
Hair Tips:
- If you’re getting a haircut, do it a week or two beforehand — not the day before!
- Bring a hairbrush, bobby pins, and hairspray for quick touch-ups.
Makeup Tips:
- Keep it natural — think “enhanced everyday” rather than full-on glam.
- If you’re not a makeup person, tinted lip balm and a little mascara go a long way!
- Don’t forget powder or blotting sheets if it’s hot out — Virginia humidity is no joke.
Mindset: Get Comfortable and Confident
Senior photos are about celebrating YOU — not about looking perfect. The best photos happen when you’re relaxed and having fun.
Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera:
- Start with some movement — walking, spinning, laughing — to shake off the nerves.
- Trust your photographer (that’s me!) to guide you with poses.
- If you feel awkward, lean into it — sometimes those moments make the best shots.
Bring a Hype Crew (Optional):
Bring a friend, sibling, or parent who can make you laugh and help you feel comfortable. Just make sure they’re the supportive type, not the “fix your hair” every two seconds type.
Day-of Checklist:
- Get plenty of sleep the night before
- Hydrate (because glowing skin = good photos)
- Eat a snack beforehand (nobody likes a hangry photoshoot)
- Arrive 10-15 minutes early to settle in
- Most importantly — HAVE FUN!
